On Friday, Gulf Shores officials hinted that they had some big names coming for a summer concert series intended to promote beach tourism affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
By Sunday, chart-topping beach bard Jimmy Buffett had let the cat out of the bag: He'll be playing the beach July 1, a Thursday, and he'll be bringing some friends.
An announcement posted at www.margaritaville.com said that the CMT cable channel will broadcast "Jimmy Buffett & Friends Live from the Gulf Coast" from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. that day. According to the announcement, Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band will be joined by guitarist Sonny Landreth, the Zac Brown Band, Kenny Chesney, songwriter Jesse Winchester and New Orleans musician Allen Toussaint.
Other details were sketchy Sunday. Buffett's site described the show as "a free musical celebration," while a similar notice at www.cmt.com suggested that ticketing information would be announced soon. Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft had said last week that the beach shows might carry a modest admission fee, which would go to wildlife-related charities.
Craft said last week that the city planned to install a stage at the west end of the public beach, similar to one used at the recent Hangout Beach, Music and Arts Festival.
Organizers hope to present five shows this summer, all of them falling in the middle of the week, he said. The bands would donate their time, Craft said, with other costs paid out of money BP PLC gave the state to promote tourism.
According to an Associated Press report, Alabama Gov. Bob Riley applauded the idea and agreed to allow the state tourism department help with production costs.
"This will begin the turnaround to bring tourists back to the beach despite occasional tarballs and help save the summer season," Riley said in a statement. "Millions of Jimmy's fans will see how clean and beautiful Gulf beaches are and many will decide to visit. This being the beginning of the important July the Fourth weekend, it could not come at a better time."
Craft said Friday that the Gulf Shores City Council would discuss the plan this evening, Monday and an official announcement would be made Tuesday.
Buffett's last show in Mobile came in December 1998. That concert at the Mobile Civic Center was a fundraiser for hurricane relief efforts and raised about $450,000 for the cause, according to organizers.

We came down here right in the middle of the oil crisis and were a bit concerned as to how our vacation would be considering the possibility of the beaches being contaminated. Our stay has been fabulous! The beaches are clear, the water gorgeous, and the house beyond our expectations. This is our first trip to Alabama and we love it! The last few years we have vacationed in Cabo San Lucas and Cancun Mexico and after our stay here, we have decided that why go to Mexico when we have the gorgeous beaches on the gulf coast of Alabama. We are right on the beach and our kids love it! They are collecting shells every day and hunting crabs at sundown.
(CNN) -- Oil company BP says it has resumed pumping oil to a ship on the surface after a weekend setback that halted efforts to siphon off the crude spewing from a damaged well at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.
Crews re-inserted the tube into the well's riser stack Sunday. The 4-inch pipe is now connected to a ship on the surface, 5,000 feet above the sea floor, and is pumping oil back to the surface, BP spokesman Mark Proegler told CNN.
If successful, the technique will capture most of the oil that is pouring out of the well. The well has been spewing an estimated 210,000 gallons, or 5,000 barrels, of light sweet crude a day into the Gulf since the sinking of the drill platform Deepwater Horizon in late April.
"In terms of containing the flow, this was a positive step forward," said Kent Wells, a senior vice president for BP.

Suttles said the application of underwater dispersants -- a tactic approved for use Friday -- appears to be working.
"The oil in the immediate vicinity of the well and the ships and rigs working in the area is diminished from previous observations," he said after flying over the area Saturday.
The Coast Guard and the Environmental Protection Agency said Friday that the decision to use subsea dispersants is an "important step" aimed at reducing potential damage from the spill, because dispersants can be more effective underwater than on the ocean's surface.
The oil slick still has not reached the beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and, according to NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) forecasts and is not expected for 72 hours.
Projections past 72 hours are not available but the winds are showing the slick being blown towards Lousisana for at least a week.
It continues to be a beautiful beach day in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.
LSU professor believes oil sightings may not be oil
According to a news report by Ben Raines appearing on AL.com yesterday (5/10/10), a Louisiana State University (LSU) scientist who is analyzing samples from the Gulf waters for federal officials believes many of the oil sightings filmed and reported by the media may not be oil at all.
LSU’s Ed Overton flew over the ChandeleurIslands and the Mississippi Delta on Sunday and said despite news reports of beached oil in the area he saw little evidence of oil that had come ashore. He was provided samples by ABC news of an unusual material which he said "were definitely not petroleum" and he speculated that the material may have been biological in nature. The material was a pinkish red shade when collected, Overton said, but later turned gray which indicates something biological. Overton further states “They were sure it was dispersed oil, but it was not even close. I'm 95 percent certain that many of the things being reported are natural processes." He said laboratory analysis was the only way to know for sure, and that takes time.
Regarding the tar clumps that washed ashore on DauphinIsland (an island west of MobileBay) over the weekend, Overton believes these may have come from the Deepwater Horizon rig that exploded and sank but probably are not from the current wellhead. He said the oil from the wellhead has likely not had time to transform into tar balls during the three weeks since the rig sank.
"There are lots of other things people are mistakenly calling oil out there. But a lot of it has none of the characteristics," Overton said. "The exact same thing happened in Alaska. People see rip lines with natural sheens. I've seen them in MobileBay. Normally you don't pay any attention ... but now everybody thinks everything is oil."
There are currently no effects of the oil spill on the beaches of Gulf Shores & Orange Beach and, according to NOAA forecasts, no shoreline impact is expected for at least 72 hours.

Last July, Richard and Carol Miller, the developers of Steelwood near the Loxley exit off Interstate 10, sold their ownership in Steelwood Country Club to 40 original club members.
A membership campaign followed. By the time the push ends, there should be an estimated 350 club members, according to Smith.
The club amenities include the golf course, a 200-acre lake, a fish camp, boating, tennis courts, clubhouse dining, swimming pools, a fitness center and land for hunting.
"The neat thing about the development is the diversity in that there are 750-square-foot cabins to 5,000-square-foot homes and everything in between," Smith said. "A lot of owners started small with a cabin and wanted to see how much they would use the amenities, and now they have moved up to larger homes."
In the past, it was tough for agents to get in the secluded Steelwood subdivision to show houses, according to Barbara Sims of Dauphin Realty West. She and her colleagues organized today's open house after learning about the number of new club members. "New blood brings more activity," she said.
The homes open for tours range from $335,000 to $985,000 and include Prickett Properties, Landmark Real Estate, Dauphin Realty and Roberts Brothers.
There are 130 homes in Steelwood and about 50 lots available for sale at prices from $67,000 to $365,000.
The new board put together a membership program that was economically feasible even in the current economy, Scott said.
The full initiation fee is $15,000, with annual dues of $1,400 to $4,410, depending on the range of services, according to the Steelwood Web site.

"They are off the sales market. It makes the rest of the units a lot better. We're not sitting there with 100 units to sell." "The condo market is changing, and we have to adjust with the times," Richardson said. "You are definitely not going to find ones to rent like this that are brand-new with Sub-Zero refrigerators, high-end appliances and hot tubs. The smallest unit is a three bedroom with 2,300 square feet and private balconies." "The market is going to be back. This is a way for people to buy some time and go ahead and furnish it for people to enjoy and use," said Chuck Norwood of REMAX of Gulf Shores. "It makes good sense. The rentals will offset some of the expenses." However, Norwood added, "It doesn't make sense to buy a unit there as a rental." The units will be operated by Spectrum's resort management division, Spectrum Vacations, which has an on-site rental management team. The rental prices are competitive for the area rental market, with a three-bedroom, 3cm HALF-bath unit leasing for $290 per night, according to Richardson. The lushly landscaped tower's amenities include an indoor pool, outdoor pool, a lazy river on the fourth floor, steam room, sauna, 3,000-square-foot gym and high-speed glass-and-tile elevators. Let me preface this blog with the fact that I just returned from a week trip to the famous Atlantis resort in the Bahamas. Believe it or not, I enjoy traveling to other beach destinations and take notes from my trip to enhance our services at Prickett Properties in Orange Beach Alabama.
The Atlantis amenities are over the top. There are shark tanks, an aquarium that beats the New Orleans aquarium hands down, huge water slides, a 30 minute lazy river ride with white water rapids, a casino, and of course those turquoise waters.
However, the Atlantis is lacking affordability. I guess that I have gotten use to good ole Orange Beach Alabama because I was shocked. A domestic beer was $7.50 and a kids hot dog was $10.00 by the pool. I shutter to think about the dinner menu prices. $16.00 for a grilled cheese....really? The adult entrees were a standard of $30-$40 and sides were extra.
"Extra" was actually the word of the week for our family because everything was "Extra." For example, it cost $15.00 a day per person to go to the gym. Rock climbing anyone? Extra! I might have stomached all the extras better had the Bahamian people sold it with a smile. Nah...who needs to be nice? You can afford it right?
I welcomed good ole Alabama prices as I returned home today and reflected on how affordable and nice of a destination we have right here at our back door in Orange Beach. Not to mention, our southern hospitality will make anyone feel at home.
A family of 8 can stay at Turquoise Place, a beachfront 3 bedroom luxury condo, for only $255.00 a night in Feb and $3800 a week in the peak season. The tower we stayed at the Atlantis runs about $800 a night for a HOTEL room. Not to mention, Turquoise Place has high-end amenities such as private hot tubs on each balcony, wolf gas ranges, outdoor gas grills, jacuzzi tubs with flat screens in the master bath and ipod docking station with surround sound. At the Atlantis, I got a dated bed and a tiny tub/shower combo and there was no balcony.
I am not undermining the beauty of the bahamian waters or the fabulous water-park amenities that the Atlantis had to offer. I am however noting how much our area has to offer at such a VERY affordable price.
Not to mention, Orange Beach is becoming quite the destination itself. Has everyone heard that Kenny Chesney is coming to the Wharf????? Enough said :)

If you have not heard about Orange Beach, you should! Orange Beach is literally adjacent to Florida so the beaches and Gulf waters are exactly the same. However, the vacation rental prices are far more reasonable. Destin is yesterday news!

Here are my thoughts on what this resort has to offer for guests. The resort is phenomenal with amenities not paralleled even at branded, high-end resorts such as the Ritz Carleton and Four Seasons. I have traveled quite a bit and stayed at many a $500 a night hotel, but never have I seen what Turquoise Place will offer guests.
